Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (promise not horror) - Anime Rec For All
Just started watching Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (available on Netflix Aus) cuz wanted short 20 something mins episodes to watch during study breaks and omg aoeifjaoweifj oaweijf IT'S AMAZING EVERYONE GO WATCH.
As a self-professed otaku (look when you get most Gintama references or at least know what anime they're referring to, I reckon you've defs unlocked otaku veteran level, plus my descent into this rabbit hole started at the tender age of 6 and I've never left so... 😆😅), I can 100% guarantee that it is suitable for ALL LEVEL OF ANIME WATCHERS, whether it's your first or 200th...
Now BEFORE the title scares you away, the genre is slice of life and comedy >>>> horror.
- There is no gore in the traditional sense → all the blood is a mix of neon-bright colours
- The zombies can look a bit scary but personally, I find it hard to be scared when they're covered in neon paint stains
- LIFE LESSONS TO BE LEARNED FROM HERE 100% so I would say suitable for 14+
Why I'm raging like a madman about this anime
1. SUPER UNIQUE storyline, never seen anything like it → brief synopsis: main lead is an exploited office worker who wakes up one day to discover Tokyo has gone to shits w a zombie apocalypse but he's soooooo overjoyed he doesn't have to return to work that his depression gets cured and the rest of the anime follows him as he sets out to tick off his bucket list whilst evading zombies and nakama power and romance ensures b/c it's a must in all slice-of-life anime (but it's not in the cliched way I pinky promise)
2. Unconventional main lead - I love love love that the main lead actually is not put together at all - he has absolutely no idea what he's doing w life, why he's going to work every day just to suffer, what everything is all for, and even after quitting the company, he still has no idea what his "real dream" is. I think this is a really powerful message b/c despite the absolute chaos that is his mind, the main lead is actually the freest and happiest of them all (at least up to ep 5)
3. Life lessons (at the right dose) - people who say anime is only for kids, I counter w "is Ricy and Morty really for kids?". One reason I'm still in this black hole is b/c there's a genre for any mood you're in. For Zom 100 specifically, just take the random ep 4 that I watched over lunch break, life lesson = "Is what you're doing YOUR DREAM or is it someone else's?" Now tell me to my face that anime is only for kids and a waste of time.
4. Right balance of comedy and hard truth so you're not just a sobbing mess but actually smiling by the end of an episode. trust me, you're need tissues one sec and the next you're trying not to spit out that badly timed sip of iced latte 😆
5. Love love love that the main lead couldn't come up w 100 bucket list ideas on the fly (and also the fact that his bucket list items were so ordinary like watching a film on 4K HD wide screen TV) - it's just so refreshing to have such a relatable main lead who have aspirations w/in the mortal realm that isn't earth-shattering or world-changing. If my gap year has taught me anything, it's that we don't all need super ambitious goals - I think it's totally fine and legit to have goals as simple (but actually super hard to achieve ngl 😅) like "I will take 10mins out of each day just for myself".
SO GO ON GO AND WATCH IT!!!!!!
